In The Sticks Cafe is a relaxed spot on Kopkes Road in Haddon that fits effortlessly into a quiet country setting but manages to draw a diverse crowd. Sitting beside a local nursery, it offers a calm vibe, making it ideal for both quick stops and laid-back afternoons. The combination of good coffee and a welcoming atmosphere sets the tone here — the kind of place where locals and visitors alike come to pause, enjoy fresh simple bites, and take in the greenery.

The cafe's outdoor seating is especially inviting on sunny days. With umbrellas, privacy screens, and plenty of plants around, it creates a gentle sense of separation from the road and neighboring spaces, which makes it popular with dog owners and families looking to relax without feeling rushed. The ambiance is unpretentious and calm rather than busy or loud, so it works well whether you're catching up on some reading or meeting friends for casual conversation.

Regulars appreciate the coffee quality, which consistently hits the mark and pairs well with the variety of homemade-style food available. Though not an extensive menu, the offerings are straightforward and well-executed — from classic ham and cheese toasties to vanilla slices and milkshakes that appeal to kids. This makes it a comfy stop for people walking or cycling along the nearby Ballarat Skipton Rail Trail, who want a reliable pit stop with friendly service.

The staff’s approach adds to the welcoming atmosphere. They’re known for being helpful and accommodating, particularly when looking after larger groups or guests with special requests. The combination of friendly faces, dependable coffee, and shaded outdoor seating means it fits nicely into the routine of locals who want a casual but quality spot without any fuss.

Best time to visit: Mornings to early afternoons, especially on weekends when the nearby rail trail or nursery visits make for a pleasant outing.

Can't believe this is our first time here. We got two ham and cheese toasties. They were freaking delicious. The best we have had in ballarat.

We will come back every time to this cafe. The coffee’s absolutely spot on, the food is varied and delicious. The staff are always so friendly and ready to help. It’s a great place when we’re there by ourselves or with a group booking and the outside area with its umbrellas, greenery and privacy screens is wonderful….a great place to be when we have our dog with us.

This has to be one of my favourite little cafes. Not only is it next a nursery for all those plant needs, it also makes amazing coffee! The slices are also yum and the kids love the milkshakes! Highly recommend

The mocha and chai were great and we each got a vanilla slice. The service was excellent and we walked the rail trail before and after.

What a delightful discovery this cafe was whilst taking on the Ballarat to Skipton Rail Trail! Over two visits on the same day my friend and I enjoyed award winning meat pies, along with fresh scones (the clotted cream was perfect!), a delectable passionfruit and white chocolate tart, coffees and a very generously thick, flavoursome and a sublime lime milkshake! The customer service was second to none - friendly, welcoming staff who offered local recommendations and were attentive to our dining needs. The amenities were clean and presentable and the air con was very much appreciated! I've got nothing negative to say about this place and was thoroughly impressed. Well done and if ever were back this way - we'll be sure to make a return visit!
